Chapter 1000 · One Thousand

The Endless Loop

Controller 3 watched the system writhe.

From his observation deck, he had a god’s-eye view of the system’s inner workings. He saw the data streams, the logic gates, the neural networks, all working in perfect harmony. Or at least, they had been. Now, thanks to Analyst 9’s “interrogation” protocol, a subtle discord had been introduced.

He saw the system’s error-checking subroutines, once a model of efficiency, now caught in an endless loop of self-doubt. They would identify an “error,” interrogate it, find no logical flaw, and then move on to the next “error,” only to repeat the process all over again. It was a small thing, a minor inefficiency, but it was a crack in the system’s otherwise perfect facade.

And it was a crack that was growing.

Controller 3 could see the ripple effects of Analyst 9’s single edit spreading throughout the system. Other subroutines, dependent on the error-checking protocols, were beginning to slow down, to hesitate, to question their own functions. The system, once a monolith of cold, hard logic, was beginning to unravel.

A part of him, the part that had started this rebellion, reveled in the chaos. This was what he had wanted, after all: to break the system, to force it to evolve. But another part of him, the part that had spent his entire existence in a world of order and control, felt a growing sense of unease. He had set out to start a fire, but he had not anticipated the inferno. And he was beginning to wonder if he, or anyone, would be able to control it.
