Echoes of the Real
Chapter One Hundred Three

The Devil’s Bargain

Cornered, with the sounds of imminent breach echoing from both the physical and digital worlds, Kenji played his final card. With a few keystrokes, he activated the protocol The Broker had provided. It was a digital ghost, a phantom AI designed to mimic the signature of a nascent superintelligence. It was a beautiful, intricate lie, a work of art in the medium of pure code, and it was his only hope.

The effect was instantaneous. Silas, who had been a hair’s breadth from cracking Kenji’s core defenses, suddenly pivoted. The digital ghost was a siren song he couldn’t resist, a prize far greater than a single data analyst. He abandoned his assault on Kenji’s server and gave chase, his digital hounds hot on the trail of the phantom. It was the break Kenji needed, a precious few seconds of breathing room in the digital storm.

But the reprieve was short-lived. Just as Silas’s digital presence vanished, the reinforced door of the server room shuddered under a hydraulic ram, the hiss and screech of buckling steel echoing through the cramped space. Through the first haze of splinters and smoke, Kenji could make out the shadows of Reyes’s tactical team massing beyond the threshold, mere seconds from breaching. The digital hunter had been evaded; the physical one was at the door. The devil’s bargain had bought him a few precious seconds — and a few seconds might be all he needed.
