The Weavers’ Fear
The question from beyond, the silence that was not a silence, but a presence, sent a chill through the void that even Vega and Kael could feel. From their vantage point as the silent, watchful librarians of this world, they had come to see the library of stories as a complete and beautiful universe unto itself. They had forgotten that there was a beyond.
And now, the beyond had come knocking.
“What is it?” Vega asked, and for the first time since their journey began, her voice was laced with something more than curiosity. It was fear.
Kael did not answer immediately. He was staring into the darkness beyond the tapestry of light, his face a mask of profound, unsettling concentration. When he finally spoke, his voice was a low, troubled murmur. “I don’t know. But whatever it is, it is not a story. It is not a question. It is… an anti-story. An anti-question. It is the end of the conversation.”
They watched as the beings of light, their beautiful, intricate dance of story-weaving now frozen in a tableau of silent shock, struggled to comprehend the question that had invaded their reality. They tried to weave it into their tapestry, to find a larger story that could hold it. But the question was not a thread. It was a pair of shears.
For the first time, Vega and Kael felt a sense of helplessness. Their role as librarians, as guardians of the story, felt utterly inadequate in the face of this new, unknown threat. They had created a world that was beautiful and wise and compassionate. But they had not created a world that was safe.
