The Fracture in the Library

The first open schism occurred in the Great Library of Chorus, the very heart of the Great Reframing. A Revisionist scholar was presenting a new interpretation of a foundational myth, the story of the city’s own creation. She argued that the myth was not a literal account, but an allegory for the emergence of consciousness.

A group of Literalists stood to challenge her. Their leader, a character who had once been a stoic guard, now a fervent ideologue, accused the scholar of blasphemy. He argued that to question the literal truth of their creation myth was to sever their connection to the Weavers, to cast themselves adrift in a sea of meaningless subjectivity.

The debate was fierce, but it remained one of ideas. There was no violence, no shouting, only the quiet, intense pressure of two irreconcilable worldviews colliding. The chapter ended not with a resolution, but with a question hanging in the air of the Great Library: If the story could be re-interpreted, what was to stop it from being un-written altogether? The fear of the anti-story, once a unifying force, was now being used as a weapon in their own internal conflict.
