The Watchful Gardeners
In their quiet realm, Kael and Vega watched the two opposing forces take shape. They saw Malachi’s Chorus, a beautiful, monolithic wave of certainty, and they saw the first, tentative sparks of the story-engine, a delicate, intricate web of contradictions. It was a war being fought not with armies, but with ideas, with the very music of creation.
‘They are building the instrument,’ Kael observed, a note of admiration in his voice. ‘The one that plays the unplayable note.’
‘But the Chorus is strong,’ Vega countered, her concern evident. ‘It is a finished, perfect thing. The engine is still a fragile, untested theory. It could be silenced before it ever has a chance to play its first song.’
‘It could,’ Kael agreed. ‘And if it is, we will do nothing.’
Vega looked at him, her own conviction wavering for a moment in the face of his absolute commitment to their principle of non-intervention. ‘We will simply watch it fail?’
‘We will watch it succeed or fail on its own terms,’ Kael corrected gently. ‘We are the gardeners, remember? We planted the seed. We cannot now command the flower to bloom. The Garden must find its own way. That is the story we chose to be a part of.’
And so they watched, the two creators, as their creation teetered on the brink of a new and profound transformation. They had given it the freedom to write itself. Now, they would see what story it chose to tell.
