Echoes of the Real
Chapter 1268 · One Thousand Two Hundred Sixty-Eight

The Unraveling of the Blank Map

The reports that reached Malachi were no longer about whispers and songs, but about journeys. His spies spoke of people traveling to seemingly insignificant places – a particular bend in a silenced river, a specific grove of trees, a certain windswept hill. His map of the world was a clean, orderly document, every story neatly concluded and filed away. But another map was being drawn over his, a map of secrets and meanings that he could not see.

He sent his Inquisitors to these places, but they returned with nothing but confusion. They could find no evidence of wrongdoing, no forbidden texts, no secret meetings. They could only report on the scent of a flower, the rustle of leaves, the feeling of the sun on your face. They were trying to police a rebellion that was being fought on a sensory level, and they were hopelessly, completely out of their depth.

Malachi stood before his grand, silent library of concluded stories, and for the first time, he felt a tremor of true fear. His control was an illusion. He had created a world of silence, but the world was still speaking, in a language he could not understand.

‘They are not just telling stories anymore,’ he whispered to the silent, un-sentient library. ‘They are becoming the story.’

He realized then that his war against the unfinished song could not be won with silence alone. He had to do more than just erase the stories. He had to erase the world.
