Echoes of the Real
Chapter 1286 · One Thousand Two Hundred Eighty-Six

The Echo of a Bell

In the center of the back room, suspended in a large, crystalline globe, was a faint, shimmering wisp of light. It pulsed with a slow, steady rhythm, and though it made no sound, Elara felt she could almost hear it – a faint, impossibly high-pitched note that seemed to exist more in memory than in reality.

‘The sound of a bell is not the bell itself,’ Vesper explained, her hand resting gently on the globe’s cool surface. ‘It is the vibration, the resonance, the way the air remembers the note long after it has faded. This… this is the memory of a bell that was never broken. It is a perfect echo.’

Elara and the scribe stared at the captured sound, mesmerized. It was not what they had been searching for, but it was something more. A physical object could be destroyed, a story could be forgotten. But an echo… an echo was a ghost. It was a story that had already happened, and therefore could not be un-written. It was a memory embedded in the very fabric of the world.

‘The plague is a story of silence,’ Elara said, her voice filled with a dawning awe. ‘It works by convincing the world to forget the song. But how can the world forget a song that is already a memory?’

The echo was not a weapon to be wielded, but a seed to be planted. It was a perfect, uncorrupted memory of a single, clear note. If they could release it, if they could re-introduce that memory into the world’s consciousness, it might be enough to remind the story of the song it was supposed to be singing.
