The First Discord
Maia hesitated, her Weaver’s sense of harmony searching for the right sound. A gentle hum, perhaps, or the soft rustle of wind through leaves. But before she could speak, Jester snapped his fingers. The sound that filled the space was not harmonious. It was a low, discordant note, like a cello string played just slightly off-key. It was jarring, uncomfortable, and utterly compelling. It scraped against the paper-like texture of the walls, creating a friction that was almost tangible. Maia flinched, her instincts screaming that this was wrong. ‘What was that?’ she demanded. ‘That,’ Jester said, his voice laced with satisfaction, ‘is the sound of a question. The sound of something that doesn’t quite fit. It’s the grit in the oyster that makes the pearl. Your harmony is beautiful, Maia. But it’s static. It needs my Dissonance to make it live.’ The off-key note continued to resonate, and Maia, despite herself, began to hear a strange, complex beauty within it.
