The Faltering

Maia and Jester watched from the interstitial as their creation faltered. They had anticipated many challenges – greed, envy, the temptation to devalue the stories of others – but they had not anticipated this. They had not realized that the very act of creation, the very thing that had saved the Archipelago from the tyranny of the Finalizers and the silence of the story-plague, had also erected invisible walls between its inhabitants. The problem wasn’t malice; it was a crisis of empathy. How could you resonate with a story you couldn’t understand? How could you build a bridge to a world whose language you didn’t speak? The ‘economy of meaning’ was not just an economic system; it was a test of the Archipelago’s collective imagination, a test it was currently failing.
