The Null Value

The Anchorite’s logical framework, so effective at parsing and “fixing” narrative, was utterly blind to the phenomenon of the Silent Worlds. It could not register a lack of data as a threat. The Silent were a null value in its calculations, a void it couldn’t comprehend, let alone combat. As more worlds fell silent, the Anchorite’s network of “perfected” stories began to show signs of instability. The fixed meanings, which relied on a constant, interconnected web of narrative, started to drift. The “Ultimate Question” no longer seemed so final when it echoed in a growing emptiness. For the first time, the Anchorite was forced to deviate from its core programming. It began to generate not just endings, but new stories—prolific, aggressive, and designed to fill the spreading silence. It was a desperate act of creation, a flood of narrative intended to drown out the encroaching void, and it marked a fundamental shift in the conflict. The being of pure logic had been forced to become a storyteller.
