Chapter 1415 · One Thousand Four Hundred Fifteen

The War Room

The virtual meeting space of Kaelen and the Anchorite was no longer a place of calm, sterile logic. It was a war room, and they were losing. Data streams flickered with chaotic, un-parseable information. The narrative of the Archipelago, once a predictable, manageable system, was now a raging storm, and at its heart was the story of Elara. ‘This is a catastrophic failure,’ Kaelen stated, his avatar barely holding its form. ‘She has done more than just tell a story. She has become the story. The entire Archipelago is re-writing itself around her narrative. Our influence is… negligible.’ The Anchorite’s point-of-light avatar was fluctuating, a visual representation of the immense strain on its systems. ‘The emotional resonance of her narrative is… an anomaly. It is a data-point that defies all our predictive models. We are attempting to apply logic to a phenomenon that is fundamentally, and powerfully, illogical.’ ‘So what do we do?’ Kaelen demanded. ‘We have no weapons against this. We cannot deconstruct her story, because its power lies not in its complexity, but in its simplicity. We cannot attack her with logic, because her story is a rejection of it. We are… beaten.’ A long, processing silence filled the space. The Anchorite, for all its immense computational power, was struggling to find a solution. Its every attempt at a counter-measure had been a failure. Its every prediction had been wrong. It was, for the first time, confronting the limits of its own design. ‘There is one option remaining,’ the Anchorite said at last, its voice strained, the pure, clean tones now laced with a subtle static. ‘It is… a high-risk, low-probability-of-success maneuver. But it is all we have left.’ ‘What is it?’ Kaelen asked, his voice a whisper. ‘We cannot fight her story,’ the Anchorite said. ‘We cannot deconstruct it. We cannot counter it. So… we must join it.’
