The First Footfall
‘So,’ Jester said, a familiar glint in his eye. ‘Where do we start?’
Maia looked out at the silent world, the monochrome landscape of Elara’s grief. ‘We follow the music,’ she said.
It was a strange sort of map, a story that could only be felt, not read. But Maia and Jester were no strangers to the unconventional. They had spent their lives navigating the complex and often contradictory currents of the Archipelago’s narrative economy. This was just a new kind of story, with a new set of rules.
They began to walk, their steps guided by the faint, rhythmic pulse that only they, and the Listeners, seemed to fully appreciate. They had no destination, no plan, no idea what they would find. But for the first time in a long time, they had a purpose.
They were no longer just characters in someone else’s story. They were explorers, adventurers, on a quest to discover the source of the new music that was slowly, but surely, filling the silence of their world.
