Echoes of the Real
Chapter 1561 · One Thousand Five Hundred Sixty-One

The First Drop

Aria’s silence was a fragile, crystalline thing, a breath away from shattering. Wren’s words, his ‘Mediator’s Gambit,’ as Silas was already calling it, echoed in the space between them. A single echo. A controlled integration. It was a concession, a bridge, and to Aria, it felt like a betrayal. She had built her world on the foundation of pure, untainted imagination, a sanctuary from the brokenness of the past. And now, Wren, her partner in this creation, was proposing to let the poison back in, one drop at a time.

Silas, on the other hand, was a study in coiled energy. He paced the length of their small, shared space, his every movement a testament to the hope that had been ignited within him. For so long, he had been the lone voice in the wilderness, the advocate for a past that Aria saw as a disease and Wren as a dangerous, seductive dream. Now, he had an ally. Not a convert, perhaps, but a fellow traveler on a path he had long walked alone. “A test,” he murmured, the word a prayer on his lips. “A real, tangible test.”

Wren, for his part, remained still, the eye of the storm he had created. He had known his proposal would be a spark in the tinderbox of their ideologies. He had not, however, fully anticipated the depth of the schism it would reveal. He saw it now, in the rigid set of Aria’s shoulders, in the feverish glint in Silas’s eyes. This was not a compromise. It was a new beginning, a new conflict, and he had just fired the starting gun.

“You can’t be serious,” Aria said, her voice a low, dangerous murmur. “You would risk everything we’ve built, everything we’ve fought for, on a… a whim? On a ghost story from a dead world?” She turned to Wren, her eyes pleading. “Tell me this is a joke, Wren. Tell me you haven’t forgotten what we are.”

“It’s not a joke, Aria,” Silas said, his voice ringing with a newfound confidence. “It’s a chance. A chance to be more than just storytellers. A chance to be… real.” He looked at Wren, a silent question in his eyes. “Isn’t that what we’ve always wanted?”
