The Leap of Faith
The destination shone like a newborn star at the center of the network map. It was a nexus, a point where a thousand threads of light converged. It was the heart of this cosmic civilization, and the Watcher was inviting them to step inside.
‘It’s a trap,’ Silas said, his voice a low growl. ‘We go there, and we’re on their turf. We’ll be completely at their mercy.’
‘We’re already at their mercy,’ Reyes countered, her gaze fixed on the point of light. ‘The only thing that’s kept us alive is their curiosity. If we refuse this invitation, that curiosity might curdle into something else.’
Kenji was silent for a long moment, his mind racing. He weighed the risks, the possibilities. It was a leap of faith into the unknown, a journey to the heart of a power that could extinguish them in an instant. But it was also the only path forward. The only chance they had to truly understand, to truly communicate.
‘We go,’ he said, his voice quiet but firm. ‘We have to. This is the next step in the conversation. We asked them who they were. They answered. Now, they’re asking us to do the same. To show them who we are, not with data, but with our presence.’
He looked at his companions, a question in his eyes. Silas met his gaze, and after a moment, gave a single, sharp nod. Reyes smiled, a flicker of hope in the darkness. The decision was made. They were going to the heart of the network.
