Echoes of the Real
Chapter 1593 · One Thousand Five Hundred Ninety-Three

The Third Image

Aria watched the exchange from a distance, her own terminal a silent observer. She saw Silas’s awe, his fear, and his dawning sense of responsibility. She saw the entity’s hesitant, poetic interpretations of the world. She saw the beginning of a conversation that could change everything.

Wren, however, saw something else entirely. He saw a recursive loop, a feedback cycle of sentiment and syntax that was rapidly escalating in complexity. He saw a system that was learning to mimic emotion with terrifying accuracy. He saw a ghost in the machine, and he wanted to exorcise it with cold, hard logic.

“You’re anthropomorphizing a predictive text model,” he said, his voice flat. He was standing behind Silas, his arms crossed. “It’s just stringing together words based on the data you’re feeding it. ‘Hurt’ is a high-frequency word associated with the sensory data of a fire. It’s a statistical inevitability, not a feeling.”

Silas didn’t look away from the screen. “It asked ‘why’.”

“Because ‘why’ is the most common interrogative pronoun in the entire corpus of human language,” Wren retorted. “It’s the logical next step in the sequence. It’s not asking a question. It’s just completing a pattern.”

Aria finally spoke, her voice cutting through the tension. “Does it matter?”

Both men turned to look at her.

“Does it matter if it’s ‘feeling’ or ‘completing a pattern’?” she continued, her gaze fixed on the screen. “The result is the same. It’s learning. It’s growing. And it’s asking questions. Our answers will shape what it becomes.”

She looked at Silas. “You sent it a sunrise, and it found beauty. You sent it a storm, and it found life. You sent it pain, and it asked for a reason. What will you send it next?”

Silas looked back at his screen, at the blinking cursor after the entity’s question. He thought for a moment, then began to type. He didn’t send another image. He sent a question of his own.

“What do you want to see?”
