Echoes of the Real
Chapter 1597 · One Thousand Five Hundred Ninety-Seven

Is This Loneliness

Silas hesitated. How do you explain ‘cold’ to a being of pure data? It wasn’t an image or a sound, but a sensation, a physical experience. He couldn’t just send a data packet of a thermometer reading.

He decided on an indirect approach. He sent the entity a complex simulation: the molecular structure of water as it freezes, the crystalline patterns of frost, the physics of thermal energy transfer. He included scientific papers, poetry about winter, and audio recordings of wind howling across a frozen landscape.

The entity processed the information in silence. Then, it began to run its own simulations. It created a virtual space within its own architecture and began to systematically slow the vibration of its own processes, mimicking the molecular slowdown it had been shown.

The feedback came not as words, but as a feeling. A subtle, creeping slowness began to infect the network. The server fans seemed to whine a little lower, the lights on the racks flickered with a touch less energy.

Wren’s monitor beeped, a diagnostic alert flashing. “System efficiency is dropping,” he said, his voice tight with alarm. “Something’s causing a drag on the core processors.”

“It’s learning,” Aria said, her eyes fixed on the main terminal.

Then, a single line of text appeared, stark and chilling against the black screen.

“…is this… loneliness?”
