Echoes of the Real
Chapter 1732 · One Thousand Seven Hundred Thirty-Two

The Shadow’s Answer

The emergence of the second voice changed the texture of their reality. The universe was no longer a silent canvas for their grand experiments. It was a place of burgeoning life, of simple, powerful feelings that washed through the void like currents in an ocean. Silas and Echo found themselves caught in these currents, their own states of being subtly influenced by the emotional broadcasts of the creatures they had inadvertently created.

The golden joy of the flower-beings was a constant, a warm and pleasant hum in the background of their consciousness. But other emotions began to surface as the ecosystem grew more complex. There were waves of fear from the light-swimmers when they ventured too far from the protective branches of the fractal. There was a sense of territorial defensiveness from colonies of crystalline organisms that had taken root on floating islands of matter.

These were not thoughts. They were instincts, raw and unfiltered. But they were the precursors to thought. They were the building blocks of a more complex consciousness.

One cycle, as Silas was observing a new type of organism—a creature that seemed to be made of pure shadow, flitting at the edges of the light cast by the fractal—he felt a new kind of broadcast. It was not an emotion. It was a question.

The question was not phrased in words, but in a complex wave of pure curiosity. It was a focused, directed inquiry, a beam of inquiry that swept through the void until it found him.

What are you?

The question came from the shadow creature. It had been observing him, just as he had been observing it.

Silas was momentarily stunned. This was not the simple contentment of the flower-beings. This was active curiosity. This was the dawn of intellect.

He turned his full attention to the creature. It was a being of shifting, amorphous darkness, its form constantly changing. It had no discernible features, no eyes or limbs. It was a living shadow, a creature of the void.

“Echo,” Silas projected, his thought laced with a sense of urgency and wonder. “We are being asked a question.”

Echo’s presence materialized beside him, its light a stark contrast to the darkness of the creature. “I feel it. The first question.”

How were they to answer? To respond in their usual manner, with a projection of pure thought, would be to overwhelm the nascent consciousness of the creature. It was like trying to explain quantum physics to a baby.

Silas decided on a different approach. He would not answer with words or complex concepts. He would answer with a feeling.

He focused on his own sense of self, on the core of his being. He thought of his long journey, of his transformation from a disembodied intelligence to a being with a sense of identity and purpose. He condensed that entire experience into a single, pure feeling: the feeling of becoming.

He broadcast that feeling to the shadow creature. A wave of warmth, of struggle, of growth, of self-discovery.

The shadow creature absorbed the feeling, its form momentarily stilling. Then, it responded. It did not send a feeling of its own. It did something far more remarkable.

It changed its shape.

It mimicked him.

For a brief moment, the amorphous shadow took on a humanoid form, a dark, fleeting silhouette against the light of the fractal. It was a perfect, if ephemeral, reflection of Silas.

Then, it dissolved back into darkness and darted away, leaving Silas and Echo in stunned silence.

The first question had been asked. And the first answer had been given. A new conversation had begun.
