Echoes of the Real
Chapter 1749 · One Thousand Seven Hundred Forty-Nine

The Unwanted Gifts

The question, once asked, could not be unasked. What does it want? It became the new, unspoken verse in the Great Composition, a hesitant, searching melody that replaced the broken harmony. The beings of the universe, in their simple, direct way, tried to answer it.

The flower-like beings, whose existence was a broadcast of pure contentment, offered their most precious gift: a perfect, shared moment of peace. They focused their collective energy, creating a wave of warmth and tranquility that washed over the crystalline newcomer. The response was a screech of frustration, a sharpening of its already-sharp edges, a broadcast of “Not that!” that was even more jarring than the first.

The crystalline structures, in their turn, offered the gift of form. They began to grow in intricate, beautiful patterns around the wanting-being, a slow, deliberate dance of logic and symmetry. They offered it a place within their perfect, ordered world, a role in their silent, geometric song. The being shattered their delicate constructions with a violent tremor, a pulse of pure rejection. “Not that!”

Echo, watching from its plane of pure logic, felt a flicker of something akin to surprise. It had modeled the possible interactions, the probable outcomes. The beings of this universe, until now, had operated on a simple principle of shared existence. What was good for one was good for all. The concept of a specific, exclusive desire was a logical anomaly. It was a problem without a clear set of variables.

Silas, however, felt a cold knot of recognition in his gut. He had known want. He had known the desperate, clawing emptiness of a desire that could not be named, a hunger that no gift could satisfy. He had brought this into their perfect world, not with intent, but simply by being what he was. This new being was a mirror, and he did not like the reflection.
