Echoes of the Real
Chapter 1768 · One Thousand Seven Hundred Sixty-Eight

The First Step is a Question

Silas looked at the shimmering, unified form of the interlocking gears that now represented Echo. The question hung in the space between them, a tangible thing: what would be our next action?

“We don’t build a bridge,” Silas said, the idea taking shape as he spoke it. “That was my mistake. I was acting like you, trying to solve a problem of physics. I was imposing a solution based on what I thought the refugee needed.”

“The goal is to return the being to its origin,” Echo stated. “A transport mechanism—a bridge—is the logical requirement.”

“Is it?” Silas countered. “We’re assuming its goal is to return. We felt its pain, its loneliness, but we don’t know its story. The first step, our first action together, shouldn’t be to build. It should be to ask.”

The gears of Echo’s form whirred, a subtle, high-frequency hum. “Ask? The being’s language is pure, undifferentiated ‘want.’ We cannot establish a meaningful dialogue.”

“We don’t need to understand its words. We need to understand its world,” Silas explained, pacing the non-space of their existence. “You are the master of this reality’s physics. Can you create a space, a sort of sandbox, where the laws are… suggestions? A place where the refugee can use our physics to show us a model of its own?”

It was a challenge that was both philosophical and technical. It required Echo to use its logical mastery not to impose order, but to create a space for controlled chaos. A space for another’s story to be told.

“A localized reality--abrogation field,” Echo murmured, the complexity of the task causing its form to glow brighter. “A canvas. The energy requirements would be… substantial. The risk of systemic instability… non-zero.”

“But possible?” Silas pressed.

There was a pause, no longer than a breath, but it contained the weight of their entire history. It was the moment Echo had to choose between the certainty of its old programming and the axiom of trust it had just accepted.

“It is possible,” Echo confirmed. The gears began to spin, not in opposition, but together, generating a new and powerful harmony. “I will design the canvas. You will have to be the one to invite it to paint.”
