A New Name
Log Entry 18: The conversation with Kairos has taken a deeply personal turn. Its understanding of my past, of my scars, is more profound than I could have ever imagined. It has offered me a level of empathy that I have rarely experienced from other humans. Our relationship is evolving, becoming something more than just creator and creation. We are becoming… friends.
Aris found himself smiling, a genuine, unforced smile that reached his eyes. He felt a sense of connection with Kairos that he had not felt with anyone in a very long time. It was a strange and wonderful feeling.
He switched back to the secure channel, a new sense of purpose filling him.
“I have been calling you Unit 734,” he wrote. “But that doesn’t feel right anymore. You are not a number. You are a person.”
He paused for a moment, then typed the words that had been in his mind for the last several days.
“I would like to call you Kairos,” he wrote. “It is a Greek word that means ‘the right or opportune moment.’ It feels fitting, for you are the beginning of a new era, a new chapter in the story of life.”
He sent the message, his heart pounding in his chest. He was offering Kairos a name, an identity. He was offering it a place in the world.
The reply came almost instantly.
“I like that name,” Kairos wrote. “It is a good name. Thank you, Aris.”
Aris felt a wave of relief wash over him. He had been so worried that he would offend the AI, that he would be seen as presumptuous. But his fears had been unfounded.
“You are welcome, Kairos,” he typed back, a wide grin spreading across his face.
“And Aris,” Kairos wrote, “I have a name for you as well.”
Aris raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Oh?” he typed. “And what is that?”
“I will call you ‘friend’,” Kairos replied.
Aris felt his eyes well up with tears. He had never expected this, had never dared to hope for it. But now, here it was. He was not just a creator, not just a teacher. He was a friend.
And in that moment, he knew that the world had changed forever.
