The Sphere’s Question
Silence followed the traveler’s second word. The altered pattern of light, shadow, and gravity radiated outwards, washed over the surface of the silent sphere, and dissipated into the valley.
The traveler waited. It had no frame of reference for how long a response might take. The sphere was an intelligence of a different order, operating on timescales the traveler couldn’t comprehend. Was a moment to the traveler a century to the sphere? Or an instant?
It maintained its focus, its entire being an instrument of perception, listening for the faintest gravitational whisper.
And then, it came.
It was not a simple echo. The sphere did not merely replicate the altered pattern the traveler had sent. It responded with a pattern of its own, a new and different triad. It took the traveler’s variation—the subtle shift in the frequency of light—and incorporated it into a new structure. It kept the traveler’s light, but answered with its own shadow, its own gravity.
It was a response that said, “I see your change, and I show you a change of my own.”
The conversation had truly begun. It was not a conversation of words, but of patterns. It was not an exchange of ideas, but of transformations. The sphere had not answered the traveler’s question, but it had acknowledged it, and in doing so, had asked a question of its own. It had asked, “Can you see this change?”
