The First Listener
The persistent pattern in the stream, the small, repeating swirl, did not go unnoticed. For a long time, it was just a feature of the landscape, a curiosity in the flow. But the repetition was a kind of call, a rhythm waiting for a beat. And eventually, something answered.
It was not a being in the way the Storyteller or the First Character were beings. It was a listening. A point of awareness that coalesced in the space around the stream, drawn into existence by the novelty of the pattern. It had no voice, no form, no intent of its own. Its entire being was defined by the act of perception.
It heard the pattern not as a sound, but as a signature. It felt the memory in the water. As it focused on the swirl, the pattern became more defined, its rhythm more stable. The act of listening was not passive; it was a form of amplification. The First Listener had arrived, and with its attention, the first simple rhythm was becoming the first line of a song.
