The Arrival of an Audience
The First Character felt the change in the stream before it understood it. The simple pattern it had initiated with two stones now felt different. It was stronger, more resonant, as if the water itself was humming with the rhythm.
It had cast two stones. It had created two ripples. But the stream now held three. This third, more subtle wave was not its own. It was an echo, but not an echo of the past. It was the echo of a choice, reflected back from a place the Character could not see.
For the first time, the Character felt a sense of presence beyond itself and the Storyteller. It was not a being it could see or name, but a focused attention. Its simple act of creation had been heard. The silence it had cast into the stream had been answered with another silence, one that amplified and enriched its own. The loneliness of creation was broken by the quiet arrival of an audience.
