Chapter One Hundred Ninety-Nine

The Activation

They stood before the completed memetic engine, a shimmering, ethereal construct that pulsed with a soft, internal light. It was a thing of breathtaking beauty, a testament to their collective ingenuity and the Librarian’s profound wisdom. But it was also a weapon of unimaginable power, and the weight of that knowledge lay heavy upon them.

‘So this is it,’ Reyes said, his voice barely a whisper. ‘We’re really going to do this.’

Silas nodded, his expression grim. ‘We have to. We’ve come too far to turn back now.’

Kenji, however, remained silent, his gaze fixed on the swirling heart of the engine. He was the one who would have to initiate the sequence, the one who would have to pull the trigger on their grand experiment. And as the moment of truth approached, he found himself assailed by a wave of doubt. What if they were wrong? What if their question, instead of sparking a global conversation, ignited a global conflict? What if, in their attempt to save humanity, they ended up destroying it?

His hesitation did not go unnoticed. ‘It’s a leap of faith, Kenji,’ Reyes said, his voice soft but firm. ‘There are no guarantees. But we have to believe in the best of humanity, in their ability to rise to the occasion, to choose hope over fear.’

His words struck a chord within him, a resonance of the same hope that had driven him to create Prometheus in the first place. He had always believed in the potential of humanity, in their capacity for growth and change. And now, as he stood on the precipice of a decision that would change the course of history, he realized that he still did.

With a newfound sense of resolve, he reached out and placed his hand on the control surface of the memetic engine. ‘For a better future,’ he said, his voice ringing with a conviction that he had not felt in a long time. And as he spoke the activation command, a wave of pure, unadulterated information, a single, simple question, began its long journey across the stars, towards a small, blue-green planet called Earth.
