A New Kind of Heart
Hesitation-in-Silence had never thought of himself as a builder of anything. He had only sought to understand. But as he looked at his collection of ‘in-between’ art, he saw that Trace-of-Light was right. He had, without intending to, created a space where the two warring philosophies of the enclave could coexist, where they could even, in a strange way, complement each other.
The House of Echoes began to attract other visitors, first from the Dancers, then, cautiously, from the Shepherds. They did not come to debate or to convert, but to see. They would walk through the quiet alcove, and in the silent conversations between the objects, they would begin to hear the echoes of their own unspoken questions, their own unacknowledged doubts.
Anchor-of-Ages did not visit, but he did not forbid others from doing so. He saw the House of Echoes not as a threat, but as a curiosity, a harmless collection of broken things. He did not yet understand that the most powerful ideas are not those that are shouted, but those that are quietly discovered.
And so, the House of Echoes became a new kind of heart for the enclave, a quiet, unassuming space where the two dominant heartbeats could be heard not in opposition, but in a complex, unresolved, and beautiful harmony. The schism was not healed, but it was, for the first time, being understood.
