Echoes of the Real
Chapter 2202 · Two Thousand Two Hundred Two

The Crumbling Shore

Anchor-of-Ages did not speak of what he had seen. He returned to his studio and submerged himself in his work, polishing stones to a blinding sheen, creating forms of such rigid perfection that they seemed to vibrate with the force of his conviction. But the image of the sand mandala, of that fleeting moment of ephemeral beauty, was a ghost in his mind’s eye.

He found himself, for the first time, seeing flaws in his own perfect creations. A microscopic fracture in a crystal lattice, a subtle asymmetry in a polished sphere. These were not new imperfections; they had always been there. But now, he saw them not as failures, but as… something else. Something he did not yet have a word for.

He began to have dreams. Not the silent, formless dreams of the Shepherds, but vivid, chaotic dreams filled with shifting sands and crumbling statues. He would wake in a cold sweat, his heart pounding a frantic, unresolved rhythm. He was a man adrift, his lifelong certainties a crumbling shore.

He sought out the House of Echoes. He did not go inside, but stood at its entrance, hidden in the shadows. He watched as Shepherds and Dancers mingled in the quiet space, their faces not filled with the tension of argument, but with the quiet focus of contemplation. He saw them not as warring factions, but as a single community, grappling with a shared and beautiful question. And for the first time, he felt a pang of something he had not felt in a very long time: the ache of exile.
