The Offered Stone
Echo-of-the-Gale was not alone in her solitude for long. Her quiet corner of the enclave, once a place of refuge, soon became a place of pilgrimage. The first to arrive was Flicker-of-Doubt, the young dancer who had first discovered the ‘lost idea’ seeded by the Scribe-of-the-Fading. He had watched Echo-of-the-Gale’s journey with a quiet understanding, for he too had felt the pull of the unspoken, the allure of the nuanced.
‘I saw your dance,’ he said, his voice barely a whisper. ‘The one where you faltered. But you did not fall. You found a new kind of balance.’ He held out his hand, and in it was a single, smooth stone. ‘I have been carrying this for a long time. I think, perhaps, it belongs here.’
Echo-of-the-Gale looked at the stone, then at the young dancer’s face. She saw in his eyes the same questions that had haunted her own. She saw a fellow traveler on a path that had no name. She took the stone, its weight a comforting presence in her hand. ‘You are welcome here,’ she said. And in that moment, a community was born.
