The Breaking of Form
The tense silence could not hold. It was shattered not by a dance, but by a voice. Gale-Force-Ten, his face a mask of thunderous fury, took a step forward. He broke the sacred form of the debate.
‘This is not a dance!’ he roared, his voice cannonading through the cavern. He pointed an accusatory finger at Echo-of-the-Gale. ‘This is a trick. A parlor game of navel-gazing inaction. You offer nothing. You build nothing. You are nothing!’
A collective gasp went through the crowd. To abandon the dance for mere words was a profound violation of their most deeply held traditions. It was an admission that his physical argument had failed.
He ignored the shocked expressions, his focus entirely on his silent opponent. ‘The purpose of the dance is to live! To strive! To fill the void with our energy, our will! You would have us sit in the dark and contemplate the dust motes. You are the antithesis of life. You are an ending.’
He turned to the assembled Dancers, his arms spread wide, appealing to the passion and fire he knew resided in them. ‘Are we Storm-chasers or are we Still-Sitters? Do we rage against the dying of the light, or do we welcome the darkness? She offers you oblivion. I offer you the storm. Choose!’
His words, raw and desperate, hung in the air, a direct challenge that could no longer be answered with subtle gestures or quiet contemplation. He had abandoned artistry for rhetoric, and in doing so, had forced an immediate and unavoidable schism.
