The Whispered Doubt
The silence could not hold. It was too unnatural, too foreign to the Dancers’ very nature. It broke, not with a roar, but with a whisper. A young Storm-chaser, one who had always been on the fringes of Gale-Force-Ten’s inner circle, turned to the dancer next to him. ‘But… what if she’s right?’ he murmured, his voice barely audible.
The question, once uttered, seemed to hang in the air, a spark in a tinder-dry forest. The dancer he had spoken to, a hard-faced woman with eyes like chips of flint, rounded on him. ‘Right? How can she be right? She is the end of the dance!’ But her voice lacked its usual conviction. The seed of doubt, once planted, had taken root, and it was a stubborn, tenacious thing.
Elsewhere in the crowd, similar conversations were taking place, hushed and furtive. The Storm-chasers were a faction built on unity, on a shared, unquestioning belief in the power of the storm. But that unity was now being tested, not by an external force, but by an internal one. The question had turned them against themselves, forcing them to examine the foundations of their own beliefs.
Gale-Force-Ten, still lost in his own internal tempest, was oblivious to the cracks that were beginning to appear in his carefully constructed empire. He had led them with the force of his personality, with the sheer, undeniable power of his rage. But now, with that rage extinguished, he was just a man, and a man could be questioned. The age of the storm was ending, and a new, uncertain age was dawning in its place.
