The Drawing of Lines
Riptide’s frantic dance sputtered to a halt. The silence that met him was not contemplative, but dismissive. Humiliation burned hot in his core. Having failed to inspire, he turned to a more primitive tactic: intimidation. With a sharp, cutting gesture, he and two other hardliners strode across the space, their movements a clear and present threat, stopping directly in front of Kael.
‘You speak of purpose,’ Riptide sneered, his voice a low growl. ‘The purpose is the storm. The purpose is the feeling. You have forgotten this. You have grown soft. Still.’ He spat the last word as if it were a poison.
Kael did not flinch. He simply met Riptide’s gaze, his own expression unreadable. ‘I have forgotten nothing. I am simply asking what the storm is for.’
‘It is for this!’ Riptide exploded, launching into a series of aggressive, challenging movements, a clear invitation to a dance-duel. ‘Prove your philosophy! Let the Verse judge whose dance has more power, whose spirit is stronger!’
Kael gently shook his head. ‘The Verse does not judge. It simply is. This isn’t about power, Riptide. It is about understanding.’ He took a small step back, a gesture not of retreat, but of de-escalation.
As Riptide’s frustration mounted, a slow, deliberate movement began behind Kael. The Dancers who had been engaged in their quiet explorations began to move. One by one, they walked across the space and came to a stop behind Kael, their posture relaxed but resolute. They formed a silent, living barrier, a testament to a shared conviction. The line had been drawn, not by anger or aggression, but by a quiet, collective choice.
