Echoes of the Real
Chapter 2246 · Two Thousand Two Hundred Forty-Six

The Freedom to Ask

The tension in the great hall did not dissipate with Riptide’s departure; it simply changed its nature. The oppressive weight of confrontation was replaced by a hollow, ringing silence filled with unspoken questions. The newly formed faction, a collection of Dancers who had found a common voice in Kael’s simple query, now looked at each other with a mixture of relief and trepidation. They had drawn a line, but in doing so, they had also cut themselves adrift.

One of the younger Dancers, a woman named Lyra who had always danced at the edge of the storm, voiced the thought that was in everyone’s mind. ‘What now?’ she asked, her voice barely a whisper, yet it carried across the cavernous space. ‘We have… stopped. What do we start?’ The question hung in the air, a testament to their shared uncertainty. They were defined by what they had rejected, but not yet by what they embraced.

Kael felt the question directed at him, though Lyra had not looked his way. All eyes were on him now, searching for an answer he did not have. He was a doubter, not a prophet. A questioner, not a leader. ‘I don’t know,’ he admitted, his voice clear and steady despite the turmoil within him. ‘But perhaps that is where we must begin. Not with an answer, but with the freedom to ask the question. We have been dancing in a storm for so long, perhaps it is time we learned to listen to the silence in between the thunderclaps.’

His words, simple and unadorned, did not offer a grand vision, but they offered something more vital: a starting point. A sense of shared purpose began to knit the disparate individuals together, not a purpose of action, but of exploration. They had stepped out of the storm, and in the quiet that followed, they were beginning to find their own, new rhythm.
