Echoes of the Real
Chapter Two Hundred Twenty-Six

Choosing the Question

A single question. The silence in the Library of Worlds was absolute, a perfect vessel for the weight of their decision. What was the most important thing to know? What was the most immediate threat? What was the first step on the long road back to protecting Earth?

Silas, ever the pragmatist, spoke first, his thoughts sharp and direct. The Reapers. Let’s learn about the Reapers. Their origin, their weakness, their numbers. We beat them once with a trick. We need to know how to beat them for good.

It was a logical choice. The Reapers were a known quantity, a direct and proven threat to humanity. But Reyes countered, his strategic mind seeing a bigger picture. The Reapers are a symptom, not the disease. The Weaver told us they were just one ‘nomadic pestilence.’ Learning about them is like studying one type of bacteria when you’re facing a global plague. I say we ask about the maps. We need to understand the new cosmic geography. Who are the major players? Where are the safe zones? Where are the front lines?

Kenji considered both arguments. Silas was right; the Reapers were a tangible enemy. Reyes was also right; there were likely far greater threats they hadn’t yet encountered. But his mind was drawn to a more fundamental question. The Weaver… it said it enforced the laws of this sector. It called what we did ‘breaking the rules.’ I think we need to understand those rules. We’re playing a new game, and we don’t even know the basics. We need to learn the physics of this new reality, the fundamental laws that govern the Weavers, the Reapers, and everything in between. If we don’t understand the rules, we can’t hope to win.

They debated, their thoughts echoing in the silent sphere. Each path held merit. To focus on the Reapers was to prepare for a known war. To focus on the maps was to prepare for an unknown one. To focus on the rules was to understand the nature of the battlefield itself.

In the end, it was Reyes who broke the deadlock. Kenji is right. We’ve been reactive since the beginning. Responding to the Tesseract, to the Reapers. It’s time we became proactive. Understanding the fundamental laws of this place is the only way to do that. It’s the most difficult, the most abstract, but it’s the only choice that gives us a chance to get ahead of the threats, instead of just reacting to them.

Silas grumbled in assent. It wasn’t as satisfying as learning how to kill a Reaper, but he couldn’t deny the logic. With their decision made, Kenji turned the full focus of their combined consciousness to the point of light. He formulated the question with all the precision he could muster.

Show us the fundamental law that we broke. Show us the nature of the Weavers who enforce it, and the consequences of its violation.

The point of light pulsed, once, and the universe dissolved.
