The Line Drawn
Vorlag stood, fists clenched, a thunderhead of fury unable to release its storm. Lyra’s question had disarmed him more effectively than any physical challenge. It was a mirror held up to his certainty, and the reflection was a void. He had no answer, only the bluster of tradition, and in the sudden, sharp silence of the training grounds, it was not enough.
Then, a subtle movement began. It started with Caelan, who took a single, deliberate step to stand slightly behind Lyra. It was not a grand gesture, but it was an unmistakable one. Another young dancer followed, then another. They were not joining a new leader; they were aligning themselves with a new question.
At the same time, other dancers, mostly older, moved to flank Vorlag. They formed a phalanx of grim-faced loyalty, their stances rigid, their eyes hard. They were the true believers, the ones for whom the dance was the only answer necessary. The training floor, once a space of unified, chaotic energy, was now bisected by an invisible, impassable line.
No one spoke. No further challenge was issued. None was needed. The schism was no longer a matter of whispered debate or private council. It was a physical reality, etched into the space between them. The Storm-chasers had not just been fractured; they had been cleaved in two.
