Echoes of the Real
Chapter 2282 · Two Thousand Two Hundred Eighty-Two

The Deliberate Silence

The old training grounds of the Storm-chasers felt vast and empty. The silence that had once been a brief respite between furious dances was now a crushing, permanent weight. Vorlag was gone, not physically, but his authority had evaporated, leaving a vacuum that no one knew how to fill. All eyes had turned to Renn, but he offered no guidance. He hadn’t sought this.

He sat alone, tracing patterns in the dust, the same patterns they had once danced with such ferocious purpose. Now, they were just lines. Empty gestures. He had not defied Vorlag out of a desire for power, but out of a desperate need for meaning. The old ways had become hollow, a storm trapped in a bottle, and he had simply been the one to point it out.

A few of the other young dancers approached him, their faces a mixture of confusion and hope. ‘What do we do now, Renn?’ one of them asked, his voice barely a whisper.

Renn looked up, and for the first time, he felt the true weight of their collective gaze. It wasn’t admiration. It was a plea. They were adrift, a ship without a rudder, and they were looking to him to be their new anchor. ‘I… I don’t know,’ he admitted, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. ‘I only knew what we were doing was wrong. I don’t know what’s right.’

His honesty did not inspire confidence. The hopeful expressions faltered. The silence returned, heavier than before. Renn had shattered their certainty, but he had nothing to offer in its place. He was not a leader. He was just the first one who had been brave enough to admit they were lost.
