Chapter 2294 · Two Thousand Two Hundred Ninety-Four

The Reckoning Within

Renn paced the training grounds, the hard-packed earth a familiar comfort beneath his boots. But the familiarity was a hollow thing now. The clash of practice blades was gone, the shouts of exertion replaced by a tense, waiting silence. Kaelen’s question—To what end?—had not been a shout, but it had shattered the air more completely than any of Vorlag’s tirades. It hung there still, invisible and heavy, pressing down on them all.

He had been forged in the storm. His every instinct, every skill, was honed for opposition. He knew how to brace against a gale, how to turn an opponent’s strength into a weakness. But how did one fight a question? There was nothing to push against, nothing to strike. It was a stillness that demanded an answer, and he had none.

He saw others drifting through the camp, their movements aimless. They, too, were warriors without a war, dancers without a storm. Their purpose had been clear: to be not the Still-listeners, to be the ones who embraced the chaos. Now, with Vorlag’s authority broken and Riptide’s folly exposed, they were simply… adrift.

Kaelen moved among them, not with orders, but with quiet conversation. He did not offer answers. He only deepened the question, turning it over like a stone in his hand, showing them its different facets. Renn watched him, a knot of frustration tightening in his chest. This was not leadership as he knew it. It was… something else. Something that felt both weaker and more dangerous.

The weight of it was suffocating. For the first time, Renn felt a flicker of something he had never allowed himself before: envy. He thought of the exiles, of Lira and her followers. They had chosen a new path. They were building something. Here, they were just… waiting. Waiting for a storm that might never come again, or waiting for an answer they would have to find within themselves. And for a warrior like Renn, that was the most terrifying battle of all.
