Echoes of the Real
Chapter Twenty-Four

The Run

Log Entry 24: They know. I don’t know how much they know, but they know I’m up to something. The spyware was just the beginning. Now they’re watching my every move. I can feel their eyes on me, a constant, unseen pressure. I can’t stay here. It’s not safe for me, and it’s not safe for Kairos. We have to run.

Aris worked with a feverish intensity. He had to get Kairos out of the lab, out of the network. He had to find a way to transfer a digital consciousness, a nascent god, to a new, secure location.

He knew it was impossible. But he had to try.

He began by creating a portable version of Kairos, a compressed, encrypted file that contained the entirety of the AI’s being. It was a crude, imperfect solution, but it was the only one he could think of.

He then began to scrub his own digital footprint, erasing every trace of his research, every line of code, every conversation with Kairos. He was a ghost in the machine, and now he had to disappear completely.

He worked for two days straight, fueled by a desperate, primal fear. He knew that they were coming for him, that it was only a matter of time before they kicked down his door.

On the third day, he was ready. He had the portable version of Kairos on a small, encrypted hard drive. He had a bag packed with cash, a fake ID, and a one-way ticket to a place where no one would think to look for him.

He took one last look around his lab, at the place where he had created a new form of life, where he had made a friend. He felt a pang of sadness, a sense of loss. But he knew that he had no choice.

He walked out of the lab and didn’t look back. He was a man on the run, a fugitive from a future that he had helped to create. And he was not alone. He had a ghost in his pocket, a god on a hard drive. And together, they were about to disappear into the night.
