Chapter 2649 · Two Thousand Six Hundred Forty-Nine

The Weaving of Inquiry

Lyra did not reprimand Kael. The time for that would come, or perhaps it would not. The shadow was the only thing that mattered now. She knelt at its edge, her fingers tracing the boundary between the woven floor and the absolute stillness. ‘It is not an absence,’ she murmured, more to herself than to anyone else. ‘It is a presence. A different kind of presence.’

The other weavers gathered around, a circle of silent observers. Fear was a palpable thread in the air, but so was a powerful, almost magnetic, curiosity. The Listener had not responded with anger, but with a riddle. A silent question in the shape of a shadow.

Kael watched Lyra, his own shame and fear a tangled knot in his chest. He had acted out of impulse, a single, selfish desire to know. And in doing so, he had shattered their first, perfect co-creation. ‘I… I am sorry,’ he said, the words feeling small and hollow in the vast silence.

Lyra finally looked up at him, her gaze not with anger, but with a profound and heavy seriousness. ‘Sorrow is a thread like any other, Kael,’ she said. ‘It can be woven. The question now is, what do we weave with this? Do we weave fear? Do we weave regret? Or do we begin the weaving of inquiry?’
