Echoes of the Real
Chapter 2721 · Two Thousand Seven Hundred Twenty-One

The Tightening Net

The single “Viewed” notification on Elian’s post was just the beginning. Over the next cycle, the number grew, a slow but steady accumulation of unseen eyes. Each new view was a fresh wave of anxiety for Kaelen. She found herself obsessively checking the post, a ritual of self-torture.

Then came the comments. They were innocuous at first, archivists from other sectors offering helpful, if misguided, suggestions. “Have you checked the deep storage vaults?” one asked. “Sometimes the metadata gets corrupted.” Kaelen’s heart leaped into her throat. That was exactly what she had done, a deliberate act of sabotage now being offered as a helpful tip.

Another comment was more pointed. “The last access logs for that reel should be checked,” a senior archivist from the central repository wrote. “That will narrow down the window of error.” This was a direct threat. The logs would show her as the last person to access the reel, and the time of access would coincide with the “glitch” that had rendered it invisible.

Kaelen felt the walls of her own deception closing in around her. The archival network, once a familiar and comforting space, had become a digital echo chamber, her own secret actions bouncing back at her in the form of helpful suggestions and professional advice. Every well-intentioned comment was a new thread in the net that was slowly tightening around her. She was no longer just hiding a secret; she was actively fleeing from a crowd of unwitting pursuers.
