The Weight of Every Word
The constant, low-level hum of the archival network had once been a source of comfort to Kaelen, a digital white noise that spoke of order and knowledge. Now, it was a source of torment. Every flicker of the data-stream, every notification, every seemingly innocuous system message felt like a new accusation. She had begun to see shadows in the code, to read malice in the machine’s impassive logic.
Her interactions with her colleagues became a minefield. A simple “good morning” felt loaded with unspoken meaning. A question about a routine archival task sounded like an interrogation. She found herself analyzing every word, every gesture, searching for signs of suspicion. The echo chamber of the network had expanded to encompass her physical reality, and she was trapped in its center.
The most difficult part was her continued correspondence with Elian. He remained polite, professional, and entirely oblivious to the turmoil he was causing. He would send her periodic updates on his “investigation,” each one a fresh stab of fear. He was, in his own way, a perfect antagonist: a good person, doing his job well, and in doing so, systematically dismantling her life.
Kaelen found herself retreating further and further into herself. She avoided the communal data-lounges, took her nutritional paste at her terminal, and communicated only when absolutely necessary. The secret she was carrying had become a physical weight, a constant pressure that was slowly, inexorably, crushing her.
