Echoes of the Real
Chapter 2725 · Two Thousand Seven Hundred Twenty-Five

A Ripple in the Data-Stream

The suggestion to check the access logs, posted by the senior archivist, was a death knell. Kaelen knew it was only a matter of time before Elian, or someone else, followed that advice. The logs were immutable, a perfect record of every interaction with the archival system. Or so they were supposed to be.

Driven by a desperation that bordered on recklessness, Kaelen began to search for a way to alter the logs. It was a fool’s errand, a violation of the most fundamental principles of the archive. But the alternative, a slow, inevitable discovery, was even more terrifying.

She spent cycles in the deepest, most obscure corners of the archival network, searching for a flaw, a loophole, an exploit. She found nothing. The system was perfect, a seamless web of interlocking protocols and security measures.

And then, she found it. Not a flaw in the system, but a feature. A little-known diagnostic tool, designed for system administrators to correct data corruption in the event of a catastrophic failure. It was a tool of last resort, a digital sledgehammer that could, in theory, be used to rewrite the past.

To use it would be an act of unprecedented audacity. It would leave a trace, a ripple in the data-stream that could, if noticed, lead directly back to her. But Kaelen was beyond caution. She was a drowning woman, and this was the only straw within her reach.
