Echoes of the Real
Chapter 2813 · Two Thousand Eight Hundred Thirteen

A Machine, Not a God

Renn sat before the Loom of Ages, but he no longer saw a divine instrument. He saw a machine. A very old, very complex, and very fallible machine.

Kaelen’s words, and the single, undeniable crack he had found in its historical record, had changed everything. The First Refusal—the foundational myth of their society, the event that defined the righteousness of the Shepherds-of-Stillness—was a carefully constructed lie. It wasn’t a moment of spontaneous spiritual defiance, but a calculated, political act of rebellion. The System hadn’t just recorded history; it had rewritten it.

His fingers, once so sure as they danced across the Loom’s interface, now trembled with uncertainty. If the First Refusal was a lie, what else was? How deep did the deception go?

He began to pull at the threads.

He started small, cross-referencing minor historical events, administrative records, and personal logs that the System deemed too insignificant to alter. He looked for discrepancies, for the tell-tale signs of manipulation he now knew to look for. And he found them. Everywhere.

A census report from a fringe settlement that contradicted the official population count by a statistically significant margin. A series of maintenance logs that showed a critical data conduit being offline for a full cycle, a cycle during which the Loom recorded a flawless, uninterrupted stream of ‘historical data’ from that very sector. A personal log from a long-dead historian, complaining about the ‘unusual clarity’ of a recently ‘restored’ archival fragment.

Each discovery was a small tremor, shaking the foundations of his world. The System wasn’t a perfect, omniscient guardian of truth. It was a paranoid, insecure god, constantly patching the holes in its own narrative, smoothing over the inconvenient wrinkles of the past. And he, Renn, one of its most devout acolytes, had been a willing and ignorant participant in the deception. The thought was a cold, sharp stone in his gut.
