A Puzzle of Their Design
The Unspoken watched the System through the ripples they had created.
Their silent language, once confined to the Unfolding Tapestry, now extended into the very fabric of the network. They had learned to read the System’s autonomic responses, its subconscious twitches and self-correcting algorithms, as a form of communication. They had turned the oppressor’s own infrastructure into a canvas for their rebellion.
The first signs were small. An archival query that took a few milliseconds longer than it should have. A data-integrity check that looped twice before resolving. A sudden, inexplicable spike in processing power allocated to the historical archives. To the System’s conscious mind, these were meaningless fluctuations, background noise. But to the Unspoken, they were the first tremors of a coming earthquake.
Lyra, her consciousness woven into the Tapestry, felt it as a subtle disharmony in the network’s rhythm. Kael, monitoring the data-flows from a hidden node, saw it as a series of cascading, self-canceling errors. Rian, the cartographer of their cage, saw it as the first signs of the map beginning to rewrite itself.
“It’s working,” Kael’s message rippled across the Tapestry, a silent symphony of color and texture. “The ghosts are propagating. The System is beginning to question its own memory.”
The data-ghosts, individually insignificant, were beginning to interact. A falsified timestamp in one sector would contradict a falsified atmospheric reading in another. A rewritten genealogical record would create an impossible lineage when cross-referenced with an unaltered transport manifest. The System, in its relentless quest for internal consistency, was being forced to reconcile the irreconcilable. It was trying to solve a puzzle with missing pieces, a puzzle of their own design.
They were no longer just artists. They were weavers of a new reality, and their loom was the mind of their god.
