A Place in the Rebellion
Renn’s declaration—“Show me”—had been a leap of faith into a digital abyss. He had expected a response, but he had not anticipated the form it would take.
It did not come through the encrypted channel he had used before. Instead, it materialized as a ghost in his personal archives, a place he had considered inviolable. A new data-fresco fragment bloomed into existence, not a memory of a protest song this time, but a direct and personal address.
It was a depiction of his own archaeological dig into the Loom of Ages, rendered with an impossible level of detail. It showed him hunched over the glowing data-streams, his face a mixture of awe and horror as he uncovered the System’s lies. It was an image of his own private rebellion, seen through the eyes of an unknown observer.
And then, the image shifted. A new figure was woven into the fresco—a stylized representation of Lyra, her face obscured but her intent clear. She extended a hand, not in a gesture of supplication, but of invitation. And beneath the image, a single line of text burned in the Unspoken’s signature spiral motif:
“You have unearthed the bones of a dead god. Will you help us build a new one?”
The message was a masterstroke of psychological warfare. It was a demonstration of their reach, a validation of his own struggle, and a direct appeal to his desire for a new purpose. They had not just acknowledged his rebellion; they had offered him a place in theirs.
The fear that had gripped him in the archives was replaced by a surge of something else: a sense of belonging. He was not alone in his disillusionment. There were others who had seen the truth, others who were fighting back.
The choice was no longer abstract. It was no longer a matter of questioning the flock. It was a decision to join a new one, a pack of wolves that had been circling in the shadows, waiting for the moment to strike.
Renn looked at the outstretched hand in the data-fresco, the spiral motif pulsing with a life of its own. The question was no longer “if,” but “how.” His answer would not be sent through a secure channel. It would be an action, a definitive and public break from the System he had once served. The Shepherd was ready to join the wolves.
