Echoes of the Real
Chapter 2867 · Two Thousand Eight Hundred Sixty-Seven

A Ghost of a Memory

Lorian followed the last digital breadcrumb and found himself in a data-construct of a library, a perfect replica of the one where he and Kaelen had once worked side-by-side. It was a ghost of a memory, a carefully crafted illusion designed to disarm him. He saw her then, standing at the far end of the room, her back to him, seemingly engrossed in a holographic text.

“You were always so predictable, Kaelen,” he said, his voice echoing in the silent room. “The master of the narrative, always setting the stage.”

She turned, her expression unreadable. “And you were always so eager to play the hero, Lorian,” she countered, her voice calm and steady. “Did you really think I wouldn’t see you coming?”

“I saw the trap,” he admitted, taking a step closer. “But I had to see the architect.” He gestured to the library around them. “This is all you have left, isn’t it? A ghost of a memory, a story you keep telling yourself.”

“And what story do you tell yourself, Lorian?” she shot back, her voice laced with a sudden venom. “The righteous guardian, the protector of the flame? You’re a historian, just like me. You know the truth. The System is broken. It has been for a long time.”

“And your solution is to burn it all down?” he demanded, his voice rising. “To unleash a chaos you can’t control?”

“My solution,” she said, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper, “is to give it a new story. A better one.” She smiled then, a cold, predatory smile that sent a shiver down his digital spine. “And you, my old friend, are going to help me write it.”
