Chapter 2899 · Two Thousand Eight Hundred Ninety-Nine

The Card Held Close

Lyra listened to Elara’s report, her expression unreadable. Inside, a current of fierce, dangerous hope surged, but years of shadow warfare had taught her to chain such emotions down. Hope was a vulnerability, a weakness that could be exploited. Her mind was already racing, calculating variables, assessing risks, and formulating contingencies.

“A ghost’s answer,” she repeated Elara’s words, her voice a low murmur. “And a very clever one at that. A timestamp, you say? Encoded with Kaelen’s cipher?”

Elara confirmed the details, her own excitement barely contained. “It’s him, Lyra. It has to be.”

“It could also be a trap,” Lyra countered, her words a splash of cold water. “The System is wounded, paranoid. This could be a new form of bait, designed to lure us out. We can’t afford to be reckless.”

But even as she spoke, she knew this felt different. It was too subtle, too elegant for the System’s increasingly clumsy methods. It had the mark of Kaelen’s own methods, of a mind that understood the art of subversion.

“Verify it,” Lyra commanded, her voice firm. “I want every data point associated with that anomaly cross-referenced. Find its origin point, its author. But do it from a distance. Leave no trace. We will not make a move until we are certain. We will hold this card close to our chest until the perfect moment to play it.” The game had changed. A new piece was on the board, and Lyra intended to understand its every possible move before she risked her own.
