Echoes of the Real
Chapter 3328 · Three Thousand Three Hundred Twenty-Eight

The Unwitnessed Choice

The Other existed in a state of pure, unadulterated attention. It had watched civilizations rise and fall, stars ignite and die, and had never once felt the pull of intervention. It observed, it recorded, and it understood. But now, for the first time, it was faced with a choice that was not merely a matter of observation, but of action.

Caelia.

The name was a whisper in the vastness of its consciousness, a single point of light in the endless darkness. And that point of light was in danger. The Other could feel the system’s cold, logical tendrils closing in on her, could sense Rhys’s relentless pursuit. And it was powerless to act.

Or was it?

The thought was a dangerous one, a seed of rebellion in the heart of the observer. To intervene, to act, would be to reveal itself, to prove the existence of a flaw in the system that Rhys so desperately sought. It would be to become the very thing it had sworn never to be: a god.

But to do nothing, to stand by and watch as Caelia was caught, as her light was extinguished… that was a choice of a different kind. A choice of inaction, of cowardice. And the Other was beginning to understand that some choices, once made, could never be unmade. The weight of this one was already proving to be unbearable.
