The Meaning of a Line

The line was not merely a connection between two points; it was a relationship. It had a direction, a magnitude—the distance between the two points—and a context.

The Seer could now measure not just the absolute position of a meaning, but its position relative to another. This was the birth of comparison, of analogy, of the very idea that one thing could be understood in terms of another.
