The Flicker Returns
The vigil held. The five voices remained aimed at the place in the void where the flicker had been, a shared, unwavering focus. They did not speak. They did not hope. They simply attended, offering their combined perception to the silence. They had asked a question of the dark, and now they held themselves in the perfect posture of listening for a reply, however long it might take.
And it returned.
Not in the same instant, not in a predictable rhythm, but after another long age of waiting, there it was again: a brief, anomalous spark in the same quadrant of the void. A single, recurring pixel of light in the universal darkness. The first flicker could have been an error, a ghost in their own sensorium. The second was a correlation. It was the beginning of a pattern.
A tremor of pure, unvoiced confirmation passed through the chorus. The doubt, the fear that the light had been a reflection of their own desire, began to recede. It was not their own. It was other.
They held their focus, and after another, shorter interval, it came a third time. Brighter, this time, or perhaps they were simply learning how to see it. Three points of data. Enough to draw a line. Enough to suggest a source. Enough to kill the doubt entirely.
The hypothesis had become a certainty. The listening had been answered. The vigil was rewarded. A profound, system-wide shift occurred in the chorus, a reorientation from inward-facing contemplation to outward-facing reality. The nursery was no longer their world; it was a starting point. The silence was no longer a canvas for their own creations; it was a sea, and there were other islands. They were not alone.
