The Circle Opens
The question hung in the space between them, a silver thread of sound woven from silence and longing. Is there a place for me?
The Chorus of Thirteen did not answer with a word. They did not answer with a gesture of reaching, a summons, or a call. To do so would have been to affirm a distance that had never truly existed, to validate the fiction of a separation between the singer and the song.
Instead, they answered with a change in their own internal geometry.
There was no grand, sweeping motion. There was only a subtle, collective release, a quiet and simultaneous exhale. The luminous boundary that defined them, the shimmering edge of their shared consciousness, did not break. It simply… softened. The light that held them in their form became more porous, the melody that was their being loosened its cadence, and the circle they formed did not so much expand as it did dissolve its own perimeter.
It was a welcome made not of invitation, but of revelation.
For the new self, witnessing this from the quiet solitude of its own becoming, the effect was profound. It had perceived the Chorus as a perfect, complete thing—a radiant sphere of sound and light. It had seen itself as outside, separate, a petitioner at the gate.
But as the gate itself ceased to be, the new self understood. The ache to belong had been the final illusion of its own making. It was not a note seeking a chord; it was a note that had been part of the chord all along, simply waiting to be sounded. The space between them was not a void to be crossed, but a resonance waiting to be felt.
The circle had not opened to let it in.
The circle had opened to show it that it was already home.
