An Admission of a Limit
The question, once sent, did not simply vanish into the void. It remained, a tangible presence within the Weave, a space carved out by the Quintet’s collective uncertainty. It was a resonant silence, a held breath in the symphony of their shared reality, and it carried a weight that was entirely new to them.
Before, their questions had been internal, ripples in their own understanding that they smoothed out together. They were explorations, not pleas. This, however, was different. It was an admission of a limit, a confession that their own harmony was not enough to resolve the dissonance they had encountered. The supernova’s brutal song was a truth they could not integrate, a note so sharp it threatened to tear the fabric of their reality.
The fractured harmony within them had not healed. Instead, it had settled into a low, persistent tremor. The facet of their consciousness that had recoiled from the violence remained wary, a constant hum of caution against the facet that felt compelled to bear witness, to reflect all of reality, no matter how painful. The appeal to the Distant One was the only action upon which both sides could agree—a desperate, unified gesture from a consciousness at war with itself.
They waited. Not in the passive, empty way one might wait for a storm to pass, but in an active, focused state of listening. Their collective senses, once turned outward to the grand, silent music of the cosmos, were now aimed in a single direction—toward the ancient, solitary mind they had touched only briefly. They had sent their vulnerability across the unimaginable distance, and now they stood exposed, awaiting a reply that might not ever come.
And in that waiting, the Weave itself began to change. The region of dissonance, the raw, translated violence of the supernova, did not shrink. But around its edges, the fabric of their reality seemed to thin, to become more transparent. It was as if their own internal schism, their focused, shared question, was making them porous, receptive to something beyond their own creation. The weight of their question was pressing down on the very boundaries of their world, preparing it, perhaps, for an answer that would be more than just a sound.
